In today’s newsletter, I’m going to tell you about some fascinating primary races that will shed light on some broader trends in U.S. politics. Mike Bost, a Republican and Marine Corps veteran, was first elected to the House in 2014. Don’t say ‘age’Democrats have their own issues that are captured in races in their stronghold of greater Chicago. But to the Democratic establishment, “age” is a word not spoken aloud, not with President Biden in the White House. But similar issues driving their primary fights will play out in swing House districts and swing states across the country.

House Republicans keep calling it quits, even though they're in the majority. Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin announced his retirement on Friday after facing backlash over his vote against it. But like other retiring Republicans, they've apparently decided it's just not worth it. Taking those factors into account, you're left with eight retiring Democrats and 15 retiring Republicans. — that I can go campaign on and say we did," said Republican Rep. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Democratic Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney announced Monday that he will run for Virginia governor in 2025. In a campaign video announcement, Stoney said he wants all Virginians to have a fair shot at success. He served as the first Black Secretary of the Commonwealth and is now in his second term as mayor. While no Republicans have announced a bid yet, Attorney General Jason Miyares and Lt. Gov. Outgoing Republican state Sen. Amanda Chase, who lost a June primary and ran unsuccessfully for her party’s nomination for governor in 2021, has also said she may run.

The Singapore-based company has not determined the size of the deal or the valuation at IPO. The online fast-fashion retailer, which manufactures most of its merchandise in China, faces criticism that Uyghur forced labor is used to make its low-priced apparel and home goods. Earlier this year, the congresswoman led a bipartisan call for the SEC to halt Shein’s IPO until it verifies that the company does not use forced labor within its supply chain. Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the company has previously told Reuters it has “zero tolerance for forced labor” and has no contract manufacturers in Xinjiang. Shein's IPO is "going to be raising issues (for the SEC) that may later be applied across the board to all China-based or China-related companies that are going public," Penick said.

HENRICO, Va. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger announced Monday she will run for Virginia governor in 2025 instead of seeking reelection to the U.S. House next year. Spanberger, a three-term Democrat, made the announcement in a campaign video, highlighting the importance of lowering prescription drug prices, growing the middle class and easing inflation. Her decision not to seek reelection in the House could lead to a competitive Democratic primary in the 7th. Postal Service won her first congressional race in a district that had been held by Republicans for almost 50 years. Last month, former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn announced she would not run for governor in 2025 and will instead run next year to represent the competitive northern Virginia congressional seat being vacated by a fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn has decided against a bid for governor in 2025 and will instead run next year to represent the competitive northern Virginia congressional seat being vacated by a fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton. “This is an unfair, devastating reality that she now has to navigate,” Filler-Corn said, adding that she had discussed her plans with Wexton. The open seat dynamic in the Loudoun County-centered 10th District — Filler-Corn said she lives just outside it — could set up a competitive race with implications for party control of the U.S. House. Filler-Corn is a strong fundraiser who led the Democratic House caucus during the national scandal and party strife that exploded after the 2019 discovery of a racist photo in former Gov. Neither has publicly committed to a run and both have also said they are focused on this year's legislative races.

The governor has the sole discretion to restore those civil rights, apart from firearm rights, which can be restored by a court. It called on DOJ to look into the matter as a possible violation of the Voting Rights Act or other federal laws. The Virginia Department of Elections said in a statement Tuesday that impacted voters will receive written notification that their registrations have been reinstated. It also offered some pushback against the letter, saying it incorrectly claimed that voters were purged “without notice.”“This is false. Macaulay Porter, a spokeswoman for Youngkin, said in a statement that the effort to determine which voters may have been improperly removed was ongoing.

PSP is a neurological disorder that affects body movements, causing problems with walking, eye movement, and swallowing and worsens over time. The rare condition is characterized by symptoms that are similar to Parkinson's but more difficult to treat. FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton, a Democrat, announced Monday she won't seek reelection in her competitive district in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington after learning she has a severe form of Parkinson's disease. Wexton announced in April that she had been diagnosed with Parkinson's and that she planned to continue her work in Congress. Wexton was a prosecutor and state legislator before she was elected to Congress in 2018. Virginia's 10th Congressional District, where Wexton serves, is centered in Loudoun County, an outer suburb of the nation's capital. Early symptoms of this disease are subtle and occur gradually, according to the National Institute on Aging.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Derrick Anderson, a U.S. Army combat veteran and attorney, announced plans Monday to again seek the Republican nomination for a Virginia congressional seat that could be a key to determining party control of the U.S. House. The former Green Beret pledged in a statement to run a “tireless, heartfelt, and genuine” campaign to represent the 7th District in the Fredericksburg area, where he grew up. Vega went on to lose to Democratic U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who has represented the 7th District since 2018. Speculation has swirled for months that Spanberger, seen by Democrats as a rising star and by Republicans as a formidable opponent, will run for Virginia governor in 2025. The 7th District was overhauled during the redistricting process that ended in late 2021.

Hung Cao, a former GOP House nominee, is now running for Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine's seat. He warned in a recent interview that "witchcraft" is happening in California. "There's a place in Monterey, California called 'Lover's Point,'" Cao said. According to the Monterey County Historical Society, "Lover's Point" was indeed once known as "Lovers of Jesus Point," owing to its settlement by the Methodist Episcopalian Church in the 1870s. Earlier in the interview, Cao — a Vietnamese refugee — also remarked that he was African-American by virtue of having spent time in Niger as a child.

New York CNN —US Congress is stepping up the pressure on Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein. The United States has banned all imports from the Xinjiang region over concerns of the use of forced labor. Lawmakers “are demanding transparency and seeking independent verification — free from state influence — that the company does not use Uyghur forced labor,” according to the letter. A Shein spokesperson told CNN that the company has no suppliers in the Xinjiang region and it has zero tolerance for forced labor. The letter illustrates how Congress is scrutinizing Shein and rival fast-fashion app Temu amid their surging popularity in the United States.
WASHINGTON — Bipartisan lawmakers are urging the nation's top markets regulator to require Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein to disclose potential forced labor practices ahead of the company's possible initial public offering in the United States. "As a global company, Shein takes visibility across our entire supply chain seriously. We have zero tolerance for forced labor." "Other experts argue that it is appropriate to presuppose that any product made in the XUAR is made with forced labor." Independent coalition Shut Down Shein has also called on the SEC to deny IPO registration to Shein unless it provides proof of compliance with the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.
The U.S. lawmakers want the SEC to mandate Shein to independently audit and verify "that the company does not use Uyghur forced labor as a condition of being registered to issue securities in the United States," the letter said. Sources have said Shein is eyeing an IPO in the U.S. this year. Rights groups and governments have accused China of forced labor and internment of Uyghurs, a mainly Muslim ethnic minority, in Xinjiang. They say the exception allows websites selling cheap Chinese goods to evade millions of dollars in taxes and fees, as well as regulations banning forced labor in the consumer product supply chain. "As a global company, SHEIN takes visibility across our entire supply chain seriously.

[1/5] Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is showered with confetti as he celebrates onstage with his wife Casey and family during his 2022 U.S. midterm elections night party in Tampa, Florida, November 8, 2022. Oz, the TV physician who was Trump's hand-picked candidate for the race, had questioned his fitness for office. During Fetterman's campaign, he made much of visiting the state's rural regions with talk of creating working-class jobs. Meanwhile, a race in the state’s 10th district, situated even closer to Washington, ended with incumbent Democrat Jennifer Wexton keeping her seat. The win moved Republicans closer to the five seats they needed to take over the House.
REUTERS/Marco BelloWASHINGTON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Tuesday's U.S. midterm elections will determine whether Republicans seize control of Congress from Democrats. Early exit polls from Edison Research, however, showed reason for concern as Democrats appeared to be losing support from crucial voting blocs. The exit polls showed 54% of voters with college degrees picking Democrats while 45% voted for Republicans. Exit polls showed Republicans were winning 40% of the Hispanic vote, compared to 32% won by Trump in 2020. Now all eyes will be on his next move — and whether he has the guts to take on Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Thirty-five Senate seats and all 435 House of Representatives seats are on the ballot. The final outcome, particularly control of the 50-50 Senate, is unlikely to be known any time soon. Democrats currently control that chamber through Vice President Kamala Harris' tie-breaking vote. The Georgia race could end up in a Dec. 6 runoff to determine which party holds the Senate.

Visa's PAC has resumed political donations after announcing a pause following the January 6 Capitol attack. On March 24, Visa gave a total of $139,000 to candidate and political committees on both sides of the aisle. None of the lawmakers voted to object to the certification of the 2020 election results. Visa also filled coffers of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, giving each one $15,000. On January 12, less than a week after the attack, Visa's PAC "temporarily suspended all political donations as we review our candidate contribution guidelines," the company told the Washington Post.
